March  2019

Hello everyone,

March is here already. At the meeting this month we will be announcing the slate for the 2019-2020 year. There will be time for nominations from the floor and we still need a Hospitality chairperson.  Please join us on March 21 to volunteer and listen to our own Jackie as speaker.

AAUW Fund, Joan PGail R.

Thank you all for your hard work to make the Barnes & Noble gift-wrapping fundraiser successful. I really appreciate all those who did double shifts and those who are not members but took the time to help us.  We made $1228.04.  This is the best year ever. Mostly due to the best days to wrap with a lot of people shopping. Such an easy way to make money, if we each try to do a little time when asked.       Thanks, Thea

Annual Branch Fund Luncheon was on Saturday, February 9, 2019.
We  gathered at Sondra’s home at 11:30 a.m. for lunch and speaker.
We made $772.56 for AAUW Fund!

Our Guest Speaker was to be Elsie Carbajal, the recipient of the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund.  She could not come at the last minute, but we hope to meet her at a later date.

Instead we contacted Diana De Loza, also a recipient of some of our AAUW Fund contributions, who graciously came on short notice to speak on the value of her continued education support from AAUW.  Here is some information on this dynamic lady.

Your Funds Chairs are challenging ALL members to step up and contribute to the FUNDS.  There are many options to consider – see the website for more information.  We would love to see a 100% of our members contribute this year to the AAUW FUNDS.  In fact, $19 in 19 is our slogan.  This is the last year of this decade so lets each of us give at least $19 in 2019.

The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW created our own memorial fund in July 2017, called the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund, to go to women who return to school just as she did.  We currently have completed our goal.  This was a short time, two year fund with a goal of $5000 for completion by June 30, 2019. The branch will get CA State and National recognition for completion. Final donation has gone to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+  year absence.

This lady is the recipient of our own Alberta Brose Memorial Fund.  We are proud!

Who Is Eligible for Membership?

AAUW membership is open to anyone with an associate (or equivalent) degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution. A “new member” is someone entirely new to AAUW or an individual who rejoins after two or more years of nonmembership.
A national member who joins a branch is not a new member. “New members” are the only members eligible for the membership discounts through this campaign.

Celebrate Graduates with a Free AAUW Membership

Celebrate the success of a graduate this season with the Give a Grad a Gift campaign. Anyone who has graduated within the past two years is eligible, so don’t forget interns or student teachers you might know.
