Empowering women since 1881

May  2019

President’s Message from Harriet:

This week I came across two women that should have an impact on us. The first is Mary Blair who was an artist for Walt Disney in the early days. She was born in 1911 and became very important to his success. What you will recognize is that he brought her back to his organization in the 1960s to create something magical for the 1964 New York World’s Fair. She imagined and created “It’s a Small World”. There is an exhibit at the Hilbert Museum of her works. What impressed me was the quote by Walt Disney that said “If a woman can do the work as well she is worth as much as a man. The girl artists have the right to expect the same chances for advancement as men, and I honestly believe that they may eventually contribute something to this business that men never would or could.”

The second was an interview by Stacey Abrams who ran for Governor of Georgia. I saw her on Book TV this weekend. She was touting her book How to Build Your Future and Make Real Change. She spoke about how you need to find out who you are and never give up on your dreams, future and most important WHO YOU ARE. I think we need to tell this to the young women who are starting their adult lives now.

Save the date of May 30 for the Installation dinner at Panda Inn, 6-8 PM. There will be more information as we get closer to the date.  Our annual planning retreat will be Saturday, June 22, at Heritage Park, Cerritos, 10-3.  All members are welcome to come and help plan our branch goals and activities for next year.

AAUW Fund, Joan PGail R.

The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW created our own memorial fund in July 2017, called the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund, to go to women who return to school just as she did.  We currently have completed our goal.  This was a short time, two year fund with a goal of $5000 for completion by June 30, 2019. The branch will get CA State and National recognition for completion. Final donation has gone to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+  year absence.

This lady is the recipient of our own Alberta Brose Memorial Fund.  We are proud!
