Empowering women since 1881

April  2019

President’s Message from Harriet:

After listening to Jackie’s program about the women of the world who are trying to raise themselves up in the world I am reminded of how lucky we are in the US. Although not all things are equal, we have the ability to be educated and create our own destiny. I just read a book called Educated by Tara Westover who was raised in Idaho by parents who did not believe in government interference and therefore did not send their younger children to school. They were minimally home schooled.  It is a memoir of Tara’s life and her strength to defy her parents and get educated. I highly recommend it to all. It is a testament to not only her strength but the mentors she encountered along the way.

April 6 is the award brunch for the Cerritos College students who are transitioning to a four year school. Please help us celebrate them. Call Carol Marsh for reservations.  9:30 CC Boardroom.

The April meeting is the elections and please save the date of May 30 for the Installation dinner at Panda Inn. There will be more information as we get closer to the date.

Our April program is The State of the Community Colleges.

Current annual dues now $100, Life Members still $41.

AAUW Fund, Joan PGail R.

The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW created our own memorial fund in July 2017, called the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund, to go to women who return to school just as she did.  We currently have completed our goal.  This was a short time, two year fund with a goal of $5000 for completion by June 30, 2019. The branch will get CA State and National recognition for completion. Final donation has gone to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+  year absence.

This lady is the recipient of our own Alberta Brose Memorial Fund.  We are proud!
