A Few Thoughts from, Beverly
I want to welcome all our members, new, old, and returning as we begin our new term for 2021-2022.
I really wanted to continue with virtual meetings and although more than half of the board voted along with me there were many who wanted in person gatherings. We were not able to procure anyone who was capable of taking control of the Zoom meeting but thank you Tobi for all your work this past year.
Because I have serious health issues, I will not be attending any AAUW meetings or functions until after the first of January. I am not only concerned about the Covid-19 Delta variant but also the various new variants being discovered. God Bless all of you who will be attending. Stay safe and stay healthy.
September will be a month of anniversaries and holidays. September 6th is Labor Day and the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, September 11th this year will be the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack on our Nation celebrated as Patriot Day/National Day of Service & Remembrance, September 12th is Grandparents Day, September 15th Yom Kippur begins, September 17th is Citizenship Day, and September 22nd is First Day of Autumn.

Our four Tech Trekkers completed their virtual, one-week experience in July. Be sure to come to our September 9 branch general meeting to hear and learn about their experiences. Especially interesting will be the sharing and explanation of each of their Wearable Tech culminating projects. You will be able to hear and see the fruits of our branch efforts to fund girls for Tech Trek.

AAUW Fund supports aspiring scholars around the globe – activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers and those pursuing professions where women are under-represented. It also provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education.
This tax-deductible fund now includes:

Eleanor Roosevelt Fund
Funding for a variety of College Student Seminars
And many other advocacy and support funds
Due to the Covid 19 virus and the new variant many of our restaurant visits may not occur. However, we will continue to do fundraising for takeout. This would occur about several times a year. We usually have a restaurant luncheon where we invite a speaker for our February meeting. Again, depending on the state mandate on the virus, we may or may not continue with the luncheon. In that regard, we may have a non-event.
Both Esther and I have appreciated your support last year, and hope that you will continue to help us with the AAUW Fund this year.
The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW created our own memorial fund in July 2017, called the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund, to go to women who return to school just as she did. We currently have completed our goal. This was a short time, two year fund with a goal of $5000 for completion by June 30, 2019. The branch got CA State and National recognition for completion. Final donation has gone to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+ year absence.

Women’s Equality Day

6 young high school women from the Legacy of the Women’s Suffrage Movement, a joint, mainly virtual, project between ABC USD’s Career Tech Education Office and La Palma Cerritos AAUW, commemorated the 101st Anniversary of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote in 1920, by hosting a teen pre voter registration drive at the Cerritos Public Library on August 26, 2021. They assisted twenty six eager 16 and 17-year-old students in filling out their voter application forms. They also encouraged library patrons to check out books on women’s suffrage, passed out AAUW membership forms/brochures, as well as bookmarks of famous American women. They proudly wore sashes, emblazoned with “Women Win the Vote” in the official colors of the women’s suffrage: purple, white and yellow. They are excitedly looking forward to the next teen voter pre-registration drive on Friday, October 8th, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the Cerritos Public Library.
The purpose of this AAUW CA grant funded project is to develop civic leadership skills and give young high school women the opportunity to explore a career in public office by interviewing former women elected officials and learning about elections and how to run campaigns. Legacy participant, Amber Wang, wrote the news article on this event that was published in the OC Breeze and Leah Triana wrote up the announcement for Cerritos TV3.
The young Legacy participants were greeted and welcomed by ABCUSD/CTE liaison Evangelina Romero, Joan Pylman, Sue Solomon, Tobi Balma, Edna Ethington, Saurabh Deedwania, Sondra Cohen, and Marilyn Forsstrom. Legacy Project Coordinators are Norma Williamson and Gail Ross.

Update: Haya Chehada
Haya is enrolled and attending her university of choice, USC. Her first Quarter has already begun.
Haya has been named a Transfer Merit Scholar and has been awarded a USC Transfer Merit Scholarship worth one quarter tuition. It is renewable each quarter as she progresses toward her degree.
Congratulations to this high achieving AAUW 2021 Academic Achievement Award recipient.

GWI was founded in 1919, by representatives of AAUW, and other international women’s groups. It used to be known as the IFUW, International Federation of University Women. Currently, Women Graduates-USA is the organization representing American women at GWI.
