Summer 2016

Friday, August 26 is Women’s Equality Day.

At my request, the cities of Cerritos and La Palma will each be presenting formal Proclamations to our Branch for Women’s Equality Day.

Where:  each city’s City Hall
When:
Cerritos:  Thursday, August 25, promptly at 7 pm.
La Palma:  Tuesday, August 16. The meeting begins promptly at 7 pm.

We are first in the agenda. Stipulation:  A LA PALMA RESIDENT MUST ACCEPT THE PROCLAMATION ON BEHALF OF THE BRANCH. Others, including board members and branch members are welcome for the presentation & photo as long as the “accepting person” is a La Palma resident.

PLEASE CONTACT Tobi (Especially La Palma members) to let her know you plan to attend.

Save the date for the August 21 Event (formerly known as the Picnic)

Members, this message is very IMPORTANT so make sure you read all of it regarding the event on Sunday, August 21st……so you are in the KNOW!

We are trying something different for this annual event since we have a potluck in September.   Barb D and Paulette went thru a lot of work and effort just to get “A” room, because the facilities are so booked all over the city but we have secured a room (The Den) at Heritage Park.   We recently found out that they are really going to be sticklers to make sure we have no more than 30 people in the room because of the fire code, so let me tell you a little more about what we have planned.

An E-vite will go out after the board meeting which is August 4th at which the price was voted on for members and spouses, as well as guests. The price is $25 each, and anything that is made above our costs (food, room rental and other expenses) will go to our Convention Fund.

We will be starting at 1:00 and you will not need to bring any food…..drinks will also be provided. Our theme is a “Luau” and we will have catered Hawaiian food, and some Hawaiian entertainment, so once we know what the charges will be on August 4th, I will send out an e mail on the 5th of August and you will need to RSVP and send a check to Marilyn (up until the 10th of August) as soon as you know you can attend.  After the first 30 members (and guests) have made their payment, whoever else wants to come will have to eat outside under the nice trees that are nearby because of the quota for the room.   After the 10th of August, please send your checks to Gail Wendland because Marilyn will be on vacation.

At the retreat, members expressed a desire to get “indoors” for this event because of the extreme heat, so we hope you will understand and embrace the idea of trying something a little different from what we have always done and come to this wonderful event!  Feel free to bring your lawn chairs if you want to sit outside.

Thank you,

Barb D, Paulette, and Gail W

Women have been running for president of the United States since 1872 — before women even had the right to vote.

This year, two high-profile women entered the race, and Hillary Clinton has now become the first female presidential nominee of a major political party.

Here are some of the women who have tried to crack the ultimate glass ceiling.

La Palma-Cerritos AAUW Installs New Officers for 2016-2017

By Edna Ethington

Twenty-eight members of the La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the American Association of University Women gathered at the Peking Wok Restaurant in Cerritos on Thursday, June 2, 2016, to thank past board members for their service and install their new board for 2016-2017. Prior to the installation of officers, members enjoyed a delicious Chinese dinner with appetizers, soup, seven different entrees and beverages of their choice including plum wine for some members.

Installation Officer Gail Ross officially installed the newly elected officers with an Olympics theme and presented each officer with uniquely creative paper gold medals. She urged each officer to “Go for the Gold” and be the best in her position as she carried out the responsibilities of her office. The elected officers for 2016-2017 are President Paulette Smith, President-Elect Joyce Grohmann, Co-Program VP’s Nancy Kawamura and Mary Ann Quinn, Co-Membership VP’s Barbara Sparks and Sue Solomon, Co-AAUW Funds VP’s Barbara Dunstan and Gail Wendland, Secretary Christine Taxier, and Treasurer Marilyn Forsstrom.

Installing officer Gail Ross thanked Paulette Smith for serving as president on the 2015-2016 board and and continuing as president for a second term. She presented Paulette with a gift certificate to the Black Angus Restaurant in appreciation of her dedication and service to the AAUW  Paulette took the opportunity to thank the outgoing board with a gift of a potted plant in a cup for each board member. She also thanked each of the members who chaired committees or held support positions on the board with a red rose and bag full of goodies.  Many of Paulette’s 2016-2017 Board members are continuing on as members of her 2016-2017 Board.

After the installation of officers was completed, Tobi Balma presented AAUW pins and certificates honoring Marilyn Forsstrom and Thea Siegel as this year’s AAUW Funds Named Grant Honorees. Tobi is a Founding Charter member of the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW and said that the Named Grant Honoree Award is the highest honor an AAUW branch can give to a member for their service to the AAUW. They were selected for this honor by three past Grant Honorees for their outstanding service “above and beyond” what was expected of members.   Both Thea and Marilyn have been AAUW members for many years. Thea has been a member since 1975 and served as President in 2004-2006. She is still active supporting many of the AAUW’s fundraisers and activities. Marilyn has been a member since 1977 and has served as Treasurer for a number of years. She is the current Treasurer and also is in charge of the AAUW’s Website, Bulletin and Directory.

President Paulette Smith thanked Gail Wendland and Harriet Moses for chairing the Committee for the Installation and also Gail Ross for being the Installing Officer. She invited everyone to come to the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW’s Planning Retreat on June 18, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Tanglewood Homeowner’s Clubhouse at 4247 Via Largo in Cypress. For more information about the Planning Retreat and directions to Tanglewood, contact host Gail Wendland at 562-860-6544.
