An International Perspective

The March 17, 2016, meeting of the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW will feature an illustrated presentation on the lives of women and women leaders in Rwanda and Vietnam, from the perspective of branch member Jackie Shahzadi, who participated in brief study tours of both countries. In addition, the presentation will feature some of the ways women’s entrepreneurial and self-help efforts in developing countries are being aided by VGIF, a 47-year-old international charitable organization, for which Jackie has served on the board of directors.

Please plan to join us!

President’s Message, Paulette

Our latest fund-raiser was called a FUND FIESTA.  And, a fiesta it was. Barbara Dunstan and Gail Wendland our AAUW Funds vice-presidents led a group of hard working women who transformed the Tanglewood clubhouse that Flo Buchanan had arranged for our use into a wonderful south of the border party room.  The food was catered and homemade. (Delicious)  The decorations were whimsical and lovely. I hesitate to name all the women who worked so hard because I know that I will leave someone out. Tobi arranged for a wonderful speaker who inspired all of us. When the party was over, it seemed that everyone pitched in to help put the room back the way it was when we first saw it.

That event and the way it was handled is the way the LaPalma-Cerritos Branch of AAUW does things. The energy, the wisdom, the thoughtfulness that was there is evident in all that we do. I am constantly proud of that group of women and proud to be called president.

Our Local Scholarship Awards Brunch will be held on Saturday, April 2, 9:30, in the Board Room of Cerritos College. Refreshments will be served along with the opportunity to meet these deserving young ladies who will be our recipients for 2015.

Our March Breakfast Club will be on Thursday, March 23rd, 9:00 AM at:

Coco’s Restaurant
11510 South St. (Across from Target near Cerritos Mall)

AAUW Funds, Barbara D., Tobi & Gail W

We have received a lot of good comments regarding the Fiesta Funds Luncheon on Saturday, the 20th of February.  We thank all of the members who came; many commented that it was a nice event, the speaker was great and the food was good and that was our goal as a committee!

Many thanks go to so lots of members including to Flo who helped arrange the association clubhouse, to the members who helped bring the desserts, to Marilyn who in addition to dessert donated two containers of homegrown blood orange juice for our drinks, and to Linda who contributed mightily to the décor to make it a festive look, and to those who helped set up and clean up.  Our speaker, Shannon was even on a ladder taking down some of the decorations along with Chris Taxier.

Everyone enjoyed the speaker, Shannon Cholakian and her energy and enthusiasm since she discovered AAUW and NCCWSL (National Conference for College Women Student Leaders.) With the addition of some donations, we made over $900 for Funds, so thank you again.

In addition, a total of $107.42 was our profit at our fund-raiser at the California Pizza Kitchen in January.  Our committee thanks all of the members for their support of all the Funds events.

Branch members staffed a table at the La Palma Learning Center of the University of Phoenix, Southern California Campus, evenings, Feb. 8-11, to distribute flyers and cards to students about the free e-membership in AAUW available to all undergraduate students at this campus.

Many thanks to the Branch members who participated: Thea Siegel, Gail Ross, Brenda Hicks, Nancy Kawamura, Mary Ann Quinn, Harriet Moses, Barbara Sparks, Sondra Cohen, Linda Hernandez, and Sue Carruthers.
