March, 2017

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Joyce

Our February was filled with the Funds luncheon put on by our Funds Vice Presidents: Gail W and Barbara D. A special thanks goes to Carol for hosting the luncheon at her home. It was an International theme with foods from around the world. Our special speaker was Andrea Milne, who is an American Fellowship recipient working on her PhD in History at UC Irvine. She is a senior pedagogical fellow and historian of HIV/AIDS activism. Her dissertation examines the advocacy work performed by the nurses who founded the first AIDS ward. Her presentation that day was very informative about AIDS. She made history come alive in a very relevant way.

We look forward to March 6 and the Candidates Forum featuring the Cerritos City Council Candidates. This forum is promoted by our Public Policy officers: Sondra and Harriet. Mark your calendar for our April 20th meeting. We will elect our slate of officer candidates for the year 2017 – 2018. Special thanks goes to our nominating committee, Thea, Chris and Sondra, for their service and the candidates for their willingness to serve our branch.

Lastly, I wish to express our appreciation for all of the work Publicity Chair, Edna, does in writing excellent articles on the activities of our branch for the many local news media. She is an important contribution to our branch.

Thank you so much for the continual support of Micah’s Way with toiletries and clothing!  We are making this request again for the March general meeting, and you may bring them to the meeting.  Please feel free to donate hotel toiletries and used clothing any time during the year.  We will accept them and have them delivered to the Micah’s Way location in Santa Ana.  They are very appreciative of your concern for the homeless, and the wonderful assistance you have given to the people who have been serviced.

Our program for this meeting will be focusing on the “Benefits of Strength Training and Balance” with our guest speaker coming from Curves.  She is excellent, and you will enjoy learning and participating in these gentle exercises that will improve our balance.  Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes as you will want to participate in these do-able exercises!

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns and plan to join us.

AAUW Fund  Barbara DGail W, & Tobi

We would like to thank everyone who came to the International Delight Fund Luncheon on February 18th.  Our guest speaker, Andrea Milne, a doctoral Fellow is grateful to AAUW for helping with her expenses while she completes her studies for a doctorate in History at U.C. Irvine.

We feasted on International Foods from many countries and we are so thankful for our members who helped bring the various foods from Italy, Japan, Germany, China, India and many more; $800 was raised for AAUW Funds. Carol and Bob were so generous to allow us to once again have the event at their house, so a big thank you goes out to both of them.
