President’s Message

Welcome to a new year of AAUW programs and activities. Meeting times are changing this year! In response to requests from many of our members, we will be holding some meetings in the daytime and some in the evening. Be sure to check the time before you head out for the meeting!

Congratulations to the Branch for pulling together to keep our leadership intact while we elect a new branch president. Members have decided to have interim presidents for two months each for this year. Congratulations and thanks to Harriet Moses, who has stepped up to become president-elect for this year. Harriet will assume the presidency in September.

Jackie Shahzadi, Interim President

Outlook Is Going Digital!
Starting with the summer 2017 issue, AAUW Outlook magazine will be going digital. You’ll still get the same insight about the issues that affect women and girls the most, but with more content. Make sure we have your preferred email address on file, and look out for this issue in your inbox!

Hello AAUW breakfast (current and and future) club members

Our September Breakfast club will be on Wednesday, the 27th, 9:00 AM at:
Huff’s Restaurant
NE Corner of Wardlow and Norwalk

In order to have a more accurate count for setting up chairs, please try to RSVP as much as possible. A day or two ahead is fine. Please bring cash in case we are not able to do separate checks. It will depend on how busy they are. Please remember to say hello to any new member or someone that you don’t always speak to at our meetings. We all like to feel welcome.

Celebrate Graduates with a Free AAUW Membership

Celebrate the success of a graduate this season with the Give a Grad a Gift campaign. Anyone who has graduated within the past two years is eligible, so don’t forget interns or student teachers you might know. A free one-year membership is a great way to celebrate their accomplishments! Give a Grad a Gift can also be applied to the Younger Women’s Task Force.

GOURMET
2017-18

Do you like to eat? Do you like to eat a variety of foods? Do you like to have fun and dine with friends (old and new)? If your answer is yes to any of these, and you are willing to prepare one-fourth of a special dinner four times a year, then you should join the branch Gourmet group.

Gourmet consists of couples (a branch member and spouse, significant other or friend, or two branch members) who have dinner together four times a year, eating with three other different couples each time. Dinner dates for 2017- 2018 are October 21, January 20, March 17 and May 19. The date can be changed, by mutual agreement, to accommodate the schedules of the couples in a group.

Fifteen couples are already Gourmet “regulars” for the coming year. We need one more couple to have four full groups but would like to have more couples to make more groups. We also need couples on the substitute list to fill in when “regulars” are unable to participate. We currently have three subs and would like more. This is a good way to “get your feet wet.”

As Gourmet chair, I will organize the menu for each meal and send the assignments and recipes to Gourmet members about three weeks before each scheduled dinner date. Each couple will host one of the four meals during the year for the three other couples in their group for that date. When you are the host couple, you will prepare the main course and one or two side dishes, in addition to setting a festive table for your guests. For the other three dinners, which you will attend at other members’ homes, you will be responsible for a different part of the meal each time: appetizer and a special beverage, soup and salad, or dessert and wine. You are responsible for the cost of the food you prepare each time. All information will be emailed to you.

Please email me at hcl.spitzer@verizon.net or call me at (562) 924-5227 by October 5 if you want to be part of Gourmet, whether a regular or a sub, or if you have any questions.
