President’s Message Paulette

My April Message is an important one.  Our April and May General Meetings will not be at the beautiful Cerritos Library.

In April we will meet on April 21 at the La Palma Community Center on Walker across the street from the La Palma City Hall at 6:30 PM. and our May 19th meeting will be at the University of Phoenix Learning Center In Building 6 that is located at Valley View and Orangethorpe in La Palma.

Nancy and Mary Ann have arranged wonderfully informative speakers for us.

Please join the group for refreshments and fellowship.  Please call me at 714-897-7848 if you have questions and leave a message if I am not at home.

A very warm thank you to Jackie for the marvelous program she presented at our March meeting!  Everyone seemed to be somewhat encouraged by the progress that is being made in other countries.  We appreciate Jackie taking the time from her very busy schedule to share glimpses of her trip to Rwanda and Vietnam.

A nice collection of items was delivered to Micah’s Way!  The organization is very grateful for the generous amount of clothing, monetary/gift cards, toiletries, etc., and the kind concern for the poor and homeless that they service.  A collection will be accepted again at our April general meeting.  A reminder will be sent via e-mail.

 Local Scholarship Brunch, Carol

The Scholarship Brunch is on Saturday, April 2nd in the Board Room at Cerritos College.  Brunch will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and then the program will begin.  We have seven recipients.  All are welcome.  We always have a good turnout for this event from the branch.  We are looking forward to seeing all of you.

Thursday May 26th, 6:30 – New Officer Installation, at Peking Wok, about $20/person

Membership, Sue S and Barbara S

La Palma – Cerritos AAUW continues to seek new members as well as help to inform some of the students at our member colleges that they can apply for free e-member-ship .  They may also become actual members of our own branch at a student fee rate. As a part of this effort we are trying to help inform University of Phoenix students by having information table at different time or events.

On April 9th we plan to staff a table as part of their Power of Women in Leadership event on April 9th from 8:30 AM – 3:00PM. We don’t have formal shifts set up so far but if you would be willing to volunteer for 1- 2 hours or as long as you would like. We need the help. Please let Sue Solomon or Barbara Sparks know. If you would like to sign up for the conference to be a part of it as well as volunteer for our table you can contact us. You may even get lunch included .

We are very thankful to the University of Phoenix for donating meeting room space for some of our meetings.

Thank you in advance for your consideration!

We have been having a great time at our monthly breakfasts. Our April Breakfast club will be on Wednesday, April 20th, 9:00 AM At:

Coco’s Restaurant,  On South St. across from Target

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL DUES

Our AAUW year ends on June 30 and YOUR dues for next year need to be paid and forwarded by me to our National Association and California State before then. Later payments cause a lot of hassle, extra paperwork and processing delays, so please try to pay by the end of MAY.   Remember that $46 of that amount is now a tax deduction, contribution to AAUW National Association as a reorganized 501(c)3 tax exempt group. Dues amount has changed, subject to voting approval at AAUW-CA convention in April 2014. Annual dues now $90, Life Members $41

Bring a check the meeting or send it to Marilyn, written out to La Palma Cerritos AAUW.

AAUW Fund Barbara D, Tobi & Gail W

AAUW Fund will be hosting an Ice Cream Social/Tupperware party on Tues. April 19th at 1 pm at Gail Wendland’s house.  Our branch will receive 40% of the proceeds from the Fundraiser Brochure distributed in the March AAUW meeting.  Additional copies can be obtained by contacting Barbara D at bmdunstan@aol.com or at the event.  A percentage will also be given on items from the regular catalog available online.

Friends & family are also invited to the Ice Cream Social where you can make a delicious sundae with great toppings or a root beer float.  Low calorie ice cream with no sugar added will also be available.  Please RSVP by April 15th.

If you aren’t able to attend the Ice Cream Social you can still order Tupperware items before and after the event until our April 21st AAUW meeting.  Contact Barbara Dunstan for more information.

This year Pay Equity Day occurs on Tuesday, April 12th. That means the average woman continues to work until that date this year to earn the same as her parallel job male counterpart earned in last year alone. This date has changed very little for many years. HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL? So DO something about it! Write to your representatives or President Obama, attend an event, be noisy.

Wear RED on Equal Pay Day
to symbolize how far women
and minorities are “in the red” with their pay.
