November 2015

President’s Message, Paulette

Our Fashion Show will be presented on the 21st.  So many on our group have worked hard on that project. The funds that we earn are so important to our scholarship program.

We have wonderful plans this month. I hope to see you all at the November General Meeting.  Be sure to bring all those grooming items that you have garnered at your stays at motels and hotels all year long.   We will get them to women who will appreciate them.

Holiday Plans are being made. Be sure to check the newsletter for the details.

Our Board Meeting will be on 5th of this month.  Please remember that all members are invited to attend.  Contact me for directions and details.

Meeting to Follow

A very special thank you to Patty Riedel for coordinating and serving as our moderator for our STEM panel at our October meeting!   The three professors from Cerritos College, Dr. Henderson, Prof. Stieber, and Prof. McLarty-Schroeder, as well as our Patty, were very generous with their time after a long day of exams and teaching. We are appreciative of each presentation and sharing of their personal experiences to attain their goals in education.

We will be having a make and take craft night. Joan Flax will help us to create interesting cards for the holidays. Many supplies will be provided, but if you have used cards or other supplies to contribute to assist in making cards please bring them along. Tobi will be leading us in making potpourri bags, which make nice little gifts for the holidays.

Please remember to bring toiletries that will be donated to the Union Mission in Los Angeles. Suggested items are toothbrushes/toothpaste, hotel soaps, shampoos and lotions, combs, hairbrushes, Wash’n’Dry, mouth wash, etc. Thank you for sharing to help those less fortunate. We will also be collecting gifts for Su Casa that will be brought to the Holiday Party at Harriet’s on Dec. 5th. A detailed list will follow as a separate document.

It will be a night to work and visit with friends. Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Fashion Show Update            Barbara D

We have sold 168 tickets and more are being ordered each day.  Please have all money and/or tickets sent to Thea by 11/10/15.  If you know of anyone with special dietary needs, please let me know so we can make arrangements with the chef.  We have over 80 items for the silent auction & 40 for the Opportunity Drawing.  Many thanks go out to all the members who helped make the baskets and obtained donations.  We need all available members to arrive early (9 am) on 11/21/15 to help set up for the big event.  I know this will be a fun & profitable event and thank everyone who has or will have contributed to it’s success.

Bring an LAF Plaintiff to Your State Convention!

The heart of LAF is the important cases and courageous plaintiffs we support. LAF Case Support Travel Grants make it possible for AAUW members to meet LAF plaintiffs and advocates and hear their stories at AAUW multi-branch events and state conventions. Submit your grant applications by October 30 to take advantage of this exciting opportunity. Questions? E-mail laf@aauw.org.

Looking for a Quick Update on an LAF-Supported Case?

Visit the redesigned LAF Case Support page, which now includes a brief summary and current case status for each active LAF-supported lawsuit. We’ll add case status updates as we hear about them. Are your branch members looking for more ways to keep up with LAF news? Encourage them to e-mail laf@aauw.org to join the LAF Express mailing list.

Nominate a Title IX Champion This Month!

Nominate an AAUW branch or member for our Title IX Champion award! AAUW members do amazing work to ensure that Title IX is enforced. You’ve investigated Title IX compliance, assembled lists of Title IX coordinators, promoted more-just sexual assault policies, and helped teach students, parents, educators, coaches, and administrators about Title IX’s requirements. The U.S. Department of Education can’t enforce Title IX alone, and your work goes a long way toward making schools and sports fairer for women and girls. Now we want to recognize, celebrate, and publicize your wonderful contributions!

Nominate an AAUW branch or member to be a Title IX Champion by sending a brief summary of the nominee’s Title IX work and a picture of the nominee or Title IX event to laf@aauw.org. Title IX Champions receive an e-award (pictured above) to display on their branch’s website, and their stories will be posted on the AAUW Title IX Champions page. To nominate a champion for our next round of awards, submit your nomination by November 10, 2015. Nominate a champion today!
