PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Joyce

Spring has sprung and Summer is just around the corner. April was a very busy month for all of us. We started off the month with our Academic Achievement Award brunch to present awards to four Cerritos College transfer students. It was a lovely brunch coordinated by Local Scholarship Chairman Carol Marsh and Cerritos Student Services Norma Rodriquez and food donations from our members. A big thank you to all members that made that day special to four female Cerritos College students. We moved on to Executive Board Meetings and a General Meeting with elections at Cerritos Park East on April 20th . We appreciate all that stepped up and filled the many offices and chairmen positions. We still need a person to fill President Elect. It is a very easy position to hold and prepares you for leading the branch the following year. Little did I know, when I joined AAUW that in two years I would be president. All of the past presidents and members are always there to help and ready to answer questions. The group gives you a wonderful support system and never do you feel you are doing it alone.

This month we selected and will sponsor two Tech Trek 7th- into 8th grade girls to the weeklong AAUW Tech Trek camp this summer at Whittier College. A big thank you to Tech Trek coordinator Celia Spitzer and her committee: Tobi Balma, Marilyn Forsstrom, Harriet Moses and Chris Taxier for making this possible.

At the end of the month we had a Succulent Plant Sale at Barbara Atherton’s home. Nancy Kawamura and her husband worked diligently to create some very beautiful plant arrangements. I want to Thank Nancy and her husband Walter and to Barbara Atherton for making the day a success. Now in May we look forward to the Installation May 23 at Luxe Buffet in the Westminster Mall at 11:30A.M. I will be looking forward to seeing everyone there.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL DUES

Our AAUW year ends on June 30 and YOUR dues for next year need to be paid and forwarded by me to our National Association and California State before then. Later payments cause a lot of hassle, extra paperwork and processing delays, so please try to pay by the end of MAY.   Remember that $46 of that amount is now a tax deduction, contribution to AAUW National Association as a reorganized 501(c)3 tax exempt group. Dues amount may be changed next year, subject to voting approval at AAUW convention in June 2017. Current annual dues now $90, Life Members $41.

Bring a check to the meeting or send it to Marilyn, written out to La Palma-Cerritos AAUW.
