September 2016

September’s Leadership Bite
“As women, we must stand up for ourselves … we must stand up for each other … we must stand up for justice for all.”
— Michelle Obama, first lady of the United States

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Paulette

How proud I was to see that our branch was highlighted in the August 26 issue of the AAUW Washington Update e-newsletter.  “The La Palma-Cerritos Branch (CA) successfully requested that both that both the City Councils of La Palma and Cerritos issue proclamations to celebrate Women’s Equality Day.” Representatives of our branch attended both events and at our September General Meeting both proclamations will be displayed, Tobi Balma was the member that made those celebrations possible.

Also – at our September General Meeting. which will be our annual pot luck and chance to sign up for our “special interest” groups, I will be able to award special lapel pins designed to commemorate and celebrate members who have  reached their 5, 10, 20, 30, or 40 years in AAUW as of  2016. Come to the September 15th meeting to see who they are. The members that have reached their 50th year as a member of AAUW will be sent their lapel pin and a special certificate directly.

And so – Another year is beginning. We will all study and thoughtfully get to our voting places in November to vote as best we can to make our country the best place on earth to be a woman.

AAUW has taken positions on several California Propositions and published Voter Guides for President and Vice President, among others.  Go to the Public Policy page for further information

MEETING PROGRAM Nancy and Mary Ann

Thursday, September 15, Skyline Room, Cerritos Public Library.

Welcome back!  We’re looking forward to another exciting, interesting, and productive year!

Our September meeting will include a potluck dinner and a presentation of Trek Tech from Tobi and her Dorm Daughter, Natalia.  With our support of Trek Tech this coming year, it’ll be exciting to hear more about this program and receive first hand experiences from these participants.

Leaders of our interest groups will also share the upcoming activities/events for 2016-2017. New participants are always welcome!

Please bring whatever you’d like to prepare for our potluck.  Keep in mind that your “dish” should be enough for 12-15 servings.  Mary Ann and I will provide the beverages.

Our potluck dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Please plan to join us!
Thank you very much…we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone!

AAUW FUND  Barbara D and Gail W

As co-chairs of the Luau along with Paulette, we were so happy with the success of the event to kick the 2016-2017 year off. We were happy to see so many husbands come and 29 of us had a ball eating delicious Hawaiian food catered by Kela Catering, as well as singing along with some of the songs.  The hula dancers were delightful to watch and we want to thank Edna and Ellen for playing the ukulele while we sang along. So many members and husbands helped decorate and clean up and we want to thank all who jumped in to help get us out of the room in a timely manner. The money we made will go to the convention fund.

For AAUW Fund, we will be having some restaurant fund raisers during the year and we thank you all for your participation.
