President’s Message

We’re already past the half-year mark for our branch hear.  Time does fly by quickly when good things are happening!
We’re looking forward to the Annual Funds luncheon on February 10th at the home of Carol and Bob Marsh.  The guest speaker will be Angeline Chen, President of the Pasadena-Foothill Valley YWCA Board of Directors.  She will describe their AAUW Community Action Grant funded, in part, by our Branch’s donations to the AAUW Fund.
I would like to thank the Program VPS (Diane H, Brenda and Thea) for a wonderful program in January that was both healthful and fun!  Zumba Gold is great for one’s health and attitude!
It’s the time of our calendar year when the Nominating Committee will make their calls to our membership asking our members to step up to the Leadership Plate.  Please consider serving in a leadership role.
Dorothy Edwards
Interim President
Reminder to members:  As is written in your directory, the AAUW mail/email list is to be used for AAUW business only.

GIRLS EMPOWERING GIRLS

Please Join us on Saturday, February 10 for our Annual Fund Luncheon and Book Sale at the home of Carol and Bob Marsh.

Our Guest Speaker, Angeline Chen, President of the Pasadena-Foothill Valley YWCA Board of Directors, will describe their AAUW Community Action Grant funded in part by our Branch’s donations to the AAUW Fund!

The YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley’s programs to empower girls — TechGyrls, Express Yourself, and Girls Empowerment Summer Camp — provide STEM opportunities to underserved, predominantly African American and Latina girls ages 10 –14. The programs give girls the tools they need to excel in school, prepare for higher education and careers, and make positive decisions in their lives.

A catered lunch will begin at 11 a.m.  Menu:  Tri tip and chicken, 2 salads, potatoes, bread and dessert.  Drink: mimosas, soda and water. Cost is $35.  You may mail your check made payable to La Palma-Cerritos AAUW to Marilyn Forsstrom.  Books may be brought to the luncheon, or to Dorothy or Gail’s home.  Hardbacks will “sell” for $1.00 cash and paperbacks for $.50 cash.  Please RSVP by February 2nd.

For further information, contact Dorothy or Gail.

The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW has created our own memorial fund, called the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund, to go to women who return to school just as she did.  We currently have $3900 deposited toward our goal.  Details below:

This is a short time, two year fund with a goal of $5000 for completion by June 30, 2019.
All donations must come through the La Palma-Cerritos branch. Personal and branch contributions may be made.
The branch will get CA State and National recognition for completion.
Final donation will go to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+  year absence.
All donations are fully tax-deductible and an acknowledgement letter for each donation will be sent to Alberta’s family.

If you wish to donate, make your check payable to “La Palma Cerritos AAUW Fund”, put Fund # 4431 in the notation line at the bottom left and send directly to Marilyn.

Tech Trek, Tobi, Celia and Edna

Thank you to everyone who contributed a total of $3,600 so that we will be sending two students from ABC Unified School District and two students from Walker Jr. High to the Whittier Tech Trek Camp from June 24 to June 30, 2018. Because of your generosity, the four students who will be selected to receive our financial sponsorships will have unique educational opportunities to learn more about career opportunities in the STEM fields.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>Membership Dues Update<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

The AAUW Board of Directors voted in June 2017 to enact the first dues change in almost a decade. Effective March 16, 2018, national dues will increase from $49 to $59.

Annual dues currently account for 13 percent of AAUW’s annual budget. They help to sustain and grow AAUW’s programs and work that advances equity for women and girls. A combination of dues, donations, and corporate and foundation funding is critical to supporting AAUW’s salary negotiation workshops, groundbreaking researchadvocacy efforts, campus leadership programs, and so much more.

We believe we can do great things together and thank you for your continued support.
