PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Joyce

This year is sailing by very fast and soon we will be into new fiscal year and new officers. In March we celebrated Women’s History Month by putting a display in the Cerritos College outdoor showcase giving information on AAUW and Women’s History Month. March 6 the Public Policy V.P.s Sondra Cohen and Harriet Moses sponsored a Cerritos City Council Candidate Forum. It gave the candidates a chance to explain their views on many issues.

April I we start off the month with the Academic Achievement Awards Brunch at Cerritos College to honor our Local Scholarship winners. Thank you to Carol Marsh and the many members that worked on securing the winners and providing the food that day for the brunch. April 6 is our next Board Meeting at President Joyce Grohmann’s home. April 20 will be the General Meeting and Election and April 29 at Barbara Atherton’s home will the fundraiser- Succulent Plant Arrangement Sale. A thank you to Barbara Atherton for opening her home and Nancy Kawamura and her husband for creating all of the plant arrangements.

Hope to see all of you at our April events and Happy April Holidays to all of you and your families.

Thursday, April 20
Cerritos Park East
Social time with refreshments is at 6:30 PM
Business meeting at 7:00 PM
Program at 7:30.

Our March program, “Benefits of Strength Training and Balance”, was excellent!  If everyone in attendance learned one new exercise for building good health and balance, then it was well worth our having Janice Woods, our speaker and owner of Curves, West Garden Grove.  We received very favorable comments/feedback, and we appreciate knowing that the program was so beneficial to many.

Please wear comfortable clothing, again, for our April meeting which will cover “Self Defense for Women”. We will be gathering at Central Park East for this month.

Our survey results indicated that most of our members who submitted their preference forms have opted for alternating day and evening meetings on a trial basis for the next year.  We will be researching locations for our meetings.  More information to follow.

Please save the date…Tuesday, May 23, 11:30, Installation of Officers, 2017-2018, at The Luxe Buffet, Westminster Mall. Cost will be $18 per person which includes beverage, tax, and gratuity.  More information will be shared soon.

Your support of Micah’s Way has been greatly appreciated.  You have touched the lives of many who are in need. Thank you very, very much!

Membership, Sue S and Barbara S

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL DUES

Our AAUW year ends on June 30 and YOUR dues for next year need to be paid and forwarded by me to our National Association and California State before then. Later payments cause a lot of hassle, extra paperwork and processing delays, so please try to pay by the end of MAY.   Remember that $46 of that amount is now a tax deduction, contribution to AAUW National Association as a reorganized 501(c)3 tax exempt group. Dues amount may be changed next year, subject to voting approval at AAUW convention in June 2017. Current annual dues now $90, Life Members $41.

Bring a check to the meeting or send it to Marilyn, written out to La Palma-Cerritos AAUW.

Celebrate the success of a graduate this season with the Give a Grad a Gift campaign. Anyone who has graduated within the past two years is eligible, so don’t forget interns or student teachers you might know. A free one-year membership is a great way to celebrate their accomplishments! Give a Grad a Gift can also be applied to the Younger Women’s Task Force.

AAUW Fund  Barbara DGail W, & Tobi

Gail W. has been handling the Orange County Register fund raiser for the month of March and it will end at the Scholarship Brunch on April 1st.  How appropriate, because the money raised will go for scholarships. At this writing we have made about $675.00;  Gail wants to thank everyone who has helped in this effort for such a worthy cause.

This year Pay Equity Day occurs on Tuesday, April 4th. That means the average woman continues to work until that date this year to earn the same as her parallel job male counterpart earned in last year alone. This date has changed very little for many years. HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL? So DO something about it! Write to your representatives or President Trump, attend an event, be noisy.

Wear RED on Equal Pay Day
to symbolize how far women
and minorities are “in the red” with their pay.

Please check out the LAF News page for current case updates.  Tobi

Update on TechTrek page, also.
