The gender pay gap won’t close until 2119 at the current rate of change.
AAUW is doing something about it. Take action now!
Empowering women since 1881
January, 2019
I hope everyone had a good holiday with family and friends. Although I could not go to the holiday party I have heard a good time was had by those who attended.
Our branch sent 4 girls to Teck Trek this year and we have plans to do the same in the coming year. We heard some very interesting speakers such as Rev Andy Bales from the Union Rescue Mission, who told us of the plight of the homeless in downtown L.A. He got to go back with the bags of hygiene products we all contributed. In January, we will take a short Tai Chi lesson to help calm us from the December tensions.
Please join us to start the new year and hear the about the programs and LAF issues and international programs that affect the women of the 21st century.
Happy New Year to all
Reminder to members: As is written in your directory, the AAUW mail/email list is to be used for AAUW business only. If you wish to share something personal with selected members, please verify with the members first, if they want to be included. Members who find themselves receiving email they do not want should feel free to ask to be removed. We’re all friends here.

Thank you all for your hard work to make the Barnes & Noble gift-wrapping fundraiser successful. I really appreciate all those who did double shifts and those who are not members but took the time to help us. We made $1228.04. This is the best year ever. Mostly due to the best days to wrap with a lot of people shopping. Such an easy way to make money, if we each try to do a little time when asked. Thanks, Thea
Save the Date: Annual Branch Funds Luncheon on Saturday, February 9, 2019.
We will gather at Sondra’s home at 11:30 a.m. for lunch, menu selections TBA.
Our Guest Speaker is Elsie Carbajal, the recipient of the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund. This is a great opportunity to meet the woman who is actually benefiting from our contributions to AAUW FUNDS.
Please plan to attend. RSVP to Joan at 562-865-6592 by February 1st. Watch for our online invitation, coming soon.
Your Funds Chairs are challenging ALL members to step up and contribute to the FUNDS. There are many options to consider – see the website for more information. We would love to see a 100% of our members contribute this year to the AAUW FUNDS. In fact, $19 in 19 is our slogan. This is the last year of this decade so lets each of us give at least $19 in 2019.
Remember to bring your checkbook on Feb 9th. If you can’t attend the luncheon, please send your FUNDS contribution to Joan or Gail, addresses in the directory. Thank you for your support!
The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW created our own memorial fund in July 2017, called the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund, to go to women who return to school just as she did. We currently have completed our goal. This was a short time, two year fund with a goal of $5000 for completion by June 30, 2019. The branch will get CA State and National recognition for completion. Final donation has gone to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+ year absence.
This lady is the recipient of our own Alberta Brose Memorial Fund. We are proud!
Elsie will be our speaker at our annual
