Interest Groups

We have a number of Branch Interest Groups that have formed out of the desires of our members for social interactions, friendship, stimulating conversation and just plain good fun. Any member is invited to join in on any of them at any time. Guests may participate a maximum of three times before paid membership will be required to continue participation.

Cover to Cover            Thea                                 Schedule
Cover to Cover meets the second Thursday of each month in Thea’s home to (mostly) discuss the chosen book. Members of the Cover to Cover Book Club select the book for the month. Contact Thea for further information.

Gourmet Group        Gail R
Gourmet is a couples or any pair group which meets at rotating host houses four times per year and shares the cost, preparation and enjoyment of a pre-planned gourmet meal. This group has endured the longest of any of our interest groups. There are always openings for new members or substitutes. Contact the chair for information.

GREAT DECISIONS      Dorothy
The Foreign Policy Association, established in 1918, is a not-for-profit, education organization and is the sponsor of the Great Decisions program.  Great Decisions is a national, civic-education program that encourages participants to learn about U.S. foreign policy and global issues; discuss multiple viewpoints in a group setting; and take part in a national opinion ballot survey on policy issues.  Great Decisions is one of the longest standing interest groups of our branch.

To this end, the FPA provides concerned individuals with Great Decisions, an annual national discussion program focusing on eight major foreign policy issues presented in an FPA-prepared book.

Information about the discussion topics is provided in a discussion book and DVD purchased from the Foreign Policy Association.  Members of the group take turns as discussion leaders

The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW is one of many organizations nationwide that sponsors a Great Decisions discussion group.   The discussion cycle is annual.  Therefore, a new discussion cycle will begin effective January 1, 2021.  Money will be collected from September, 2017 through the end of October, 2017 so that discussion books for 2018 can be ordered.  The cost of materials is $36.

Should you have any questions regarding membership in the group please contact Dorothy.

The Great Decisions group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM.

Readers’ Theater
The stage lights are up again for Readers’ Theater! We meet the first Monday of each month at a member’s home. We get together about 6:45 for conversation, and start reading the play at 7:00. You don’t need to be an actress to join this group! We just have a lot of fun reading all kinds of plays – drama, mystery, comedy, older plays, contemporary plays – all delightful to share. It is not necessary to attend each reading to belong to this group. If you have any questions about Reader’s Theater, or you would like to be included on the e-mail reminder list, please call or send me a message.  I’m hoping to have many of you join us for this enjoyable activity!  Esther: 562-425-8141

There is a charge per person each year for regular members.  This covers the cost of receiving the plays and of shipping them on to the next reading group.
