A Few Thoughts from, Beverly
We are approaching our holiday season and gift giving time of the year. November’s General Meeting will be an opportunity to donate toiletries and nonperishable food items. Our speaker, Pamela Sepulveda, with Cerritos College Falcon’s Nest will be collecting those items prior to her presentation at Cerritos Library.
November has some important dates. November 1st All Saint’s Day, for some November 2nd is Election Day, November 4th First Day of Diwali, November 7th Daylight Saving Time Ends –BOO!, November 11th Veterans Day, November 25th Thanksgiving, November 28th First Day of Advent as well as Hanukkah Begins eight days of celebration.
I want to acknowledge those having birthdays for the month of November and December: Faith Herschler 11/18, Jackie Shahzadi 11/26, Diane Hutson 11/30, Eileen Braeman 12/4, Sondra Cohen 12/7, Karen Cox 12/8, Patricia McClelland 12/10, and Gail Ross 12/12. Happy Birthday to all and may you have a long and healthy life.
As each of us celebrates in our own fashion please be aware and diligent that Covid-19 and its variants is still present and causing as much harm as it can. Even persons vaccinated are contracting Covid so be particularly careful around family and friends and observe all the precautions available as you continue to enjoy your holidays.
I am hoping and do plan to return in January 2022. I want to THANK everyone who has assisted and helped to keep our meetings running smoothly. I truly appreciate all the hard work.
May we all look forward to Sweet Memories in 2022 by being well and staying healthy.

Pam Sepulveda will be our featured speaker for our general meeting. She heads the Falcon’s Nest Food Bank for the students at Cerritos College. She will explain this project, and also address the current situation of homelessness among the students.
The following items may be brought to the meeting to contribute to the food bank:
~Cereal
~Any non-perishable food e.g. soup, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, instant ramen, canned vegetables, chili beans, etc.
~Clothing
~Toiletries

Women’s Issues/ Community Service:
The Su Casa Grocery Shoppers are back in action starting October 2021. We have four teams that will be shopping for the families at the shelter every other week. Thank you to the following members for volunteering to be shoppers: Marilyn Forsstrom, a 30 + year veteran, Harriett Moses, Joan Pylman, Mary Ann Quinn, Norma Williamson, and Diann Zenda. Norma and Diann are new to the team this year. Hurray!

I have nothing new to report regarding Membership and Gourmet….we are still on hold and will plan another outdoor event soon. You will be notified by email regarding the details. We had a great time at the last event.
Tech Trek, Celia and Edna
California Tech Trek plans to hold in-person camps in the summer of 2022. However, at this time, not all potential campuses have been confirmed. From the information we now have, the branch board plans to participate in Tech Trek 2022 and hopes to sponsor two girls to attend camp. We already have enough money to do so and no fund raising efforts would be needed. Our hope is to be able to send the girls to Whittier College with UC San Diego as an alternate choice. California AAUW Tech Trek is currently conducting a survey of branches to determine which ones would participate in Tech Trek, how many girls they would like to send, and what their first and alternate site locations would be. We probably will not have confirmed specifics until early January.

We will be having our next AAUW Fund Fundraiser on November 4th. We will be at the Chipotle at 12560 Artesia Blvd. (SE corner of Artesia and Bloomfield).You can dine in or takeout. In either case you must show the flyer which you can download and print HERE or from the email or just show it on your smart phone.

What is AAUW Fund all about? Most of us have been members for many years and understand the Mission and the issues that AAUW supports. If you would like to see tangible evidence of the impact and use of some of the AAUW Fund money raised, the California AAUW has three Zoom programs (indicated below) featuring award recipients describing their research and projects.
Anyone can register and sit in on any or all of the presentations.
Black Holes? Rural women’s health? Social classification? What incredible topics are the 37(!) AAUW-funded fellowship and grant recipients studying? Attend these live virtual events showcasing their personal stories and fascinating studies. But wait, there’s more! This is a chance to see the great speakers who can be scheduled for branch programs!

AAUW Fund supports aspiring scholars around the globe – activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers and those pursuing professions where women are under-represented. It also provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education.

Due to the Covid 19 virus and the new variant many of our restaurant visits may not occur. However, we will continue to do fundraising for takeout. This would occur about several times a year. We usually have a restaurant luncheon where we invite a speaker for our February meeting. Again, depending on the state mandate on the virus, we may or may not continue with the luncheon. In that regard, we may have a non-event.
Both Esther and I have appreciated your support last year, and hope that you will continue to help us with the AAUW Fund this year.
The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW created our own memorial fund in July 2017, called the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund, to go to women who return to school just as she did. We currently have completed our goal. This was a short time, two year fund with a goal of $5000 for completion by June 30, 2019. The branch got CA State and National recognition for completion. Final donation has gone to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+ year absence.

Women’s Equality Day
On October 8, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. AAUW (American Association of University Women) of La Palma-Cerritos, Legacy Project, held a Teen Voter Pre-Registration Drive in commemoration of the 110th anniversary of California women’s right to vote on October 10, 1911. Thirty interested teens, ages 16 and 17, were instructed on how to pre-register to vote in California elections. This event started at Cerritos Library and expanded to Cerritos High School. AAUW prepared thirty voter registration forms for 16- and 17-year olds to sign up on. In the span of less than one hour 30 eligible teens had been encountered and all applications had been distributed! This was a great achievement that the young ladies of the Legacy Project accomplished: Alessa Gomez (Cerritos High School), Krishna Hajari (Cerritos High School), Jamie Gokim (Cerritos High School), Leah Triana (Gahr High School).
As soon as we arrived at the library, we immediately started approaching teens and passing out applications to interested young people inside and outside the Cerritos Library. We approached various students and asked them if they were interested in pre-registering to vote and those eligible were instructed on how to fill out the voter application form and begin preparing to exercise their right to vote when they turned 18 years old. We also passed out flyers entitled: “Are you in High School? Become a Poll Worker” and were able to convince some older teens to become poll workers and get paid, which greatly motivated them to see the impact they could make in their community.
After finishing up at the library, we headed over to Cerritos High School, across the street, in order to seek out more students who were at the moment participating in the many after school activities, including sports and clubs. We were able to hand out and talk about our forms which greatly demonstrates the interest and drive that we young people have when deciding who our future leaders will be. Additionally, there were again a great deal of students who were interested in becoming poll workers and helping their community vote.

Update: Haya Chehada
Haya is enrolled and attending her university of choice, USC. Her first Quarter has already begun.
Haya has been named a Transfer Merit Scholar and has been awarded a USC Transfer Merit Scholarship worth one quarter tuition. It is renewable each quarter as she progresses toward her degree.
Congratulations to this high achieving AAUW 2021 Academic Achievement Award recipient.
