September, 2018

President’s Message, Harriet

A good time was had by all who attended the Taco Social in August. Thanks to all who participated. The year is starting off in September with a pot luck and the Tech Trek girls who are always fascinating. It’s always great to hear about the girls experiences. I think they gain years of confidence in just that one week. We’ll also hear from the interest groups. See you on September 20th.

Reminder to members:  As is written in your directory, the AAUW mail/email list is to be used for AAUW business only.  If you wish to share something personal with selected members, please verify with the members first, if they want to be included.  Members who find themselves receiving email they do not want should feel free to ask to be removed.  We’re all friends here.

Important dates:

We are all members of LACIC, the Los Angeles County Inter-branch Council of AAUW.  LACIC regularly puts on programs of interest nearby in Whittier.  All members are invited.  For their latest newsletter and information about the next meeting on Sunday September 9th from 2-4, at PIH (formerly known as Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital), 12401 Washington Boulevard, Whittier just click HERE.  The presenter is Nancy Mahr, an AAUW California director and public policy co-chair and member of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Branch of AAUW. Her talk will be followed by an open discussion on AAUW’s perspective.

The Walker Jr. High School students, Shahan Ozturk and Lilly Sierra, came to the meeting of the Kiwanis Club of La Palma on July 26,2018, to thank them for their $200 donation last year. They did a great job of describing their favorite part of being at the Whittier STEM Tech Trek Camp in June and how the camp influenced their future aspirations.  Shahan enjoyed classes in neuroscience and now is considering becoming a neurosurgeon. Lilly enjoyed coding and wants to study more about computers.
Be sure to  come to our first meeting on September 20,  2018  to meet all four of the students we sent to the Whittier STEM Tech Trek Camp in June including Arianna and Edrianna from Ross Middle School in ABC Unified School District.

A Statement from your national AAUW Board of Directors

Logo treatment 2018 AAUW National Bylaws Amendment Vote

The AAUW National Board of Directors put three proposals for bylaws amendments before the membership for a vote this spring. The board strongly supported the proposed amendments that they believe will help keep AAUW vital as an organization and enable us to increase our impact in advancing equity for women and girls.  Results are below.

The proposed amendments addressed creating three-year staggered board terms (approved), opening board service to those outside of the AAUW membership (failed), and eliminating the degree requirement for membership (failed). While rationale and details for each proposed amendment can be found on the AAUW website, the overarching motivation for these changes at this time is to uphold and advance AAUW’s mission and ensure optimal execution at the national board level.

Thank you for voting on the three proposed amendments to the AAUW Bylaws in the 2018 National Bylaws Amendment Vote. We had a great turnout this year with over 19 percent of eligible members participating in the vote, more than three times the 5 percent required by our bylaws. Thank you for making your voice matter on these important issues.

The branch will get CA State and National recognition for completion. Final donation has gone to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+  year absence.

OurShape The Future Membership Campaign

The Shape the Future membership campaign is a recruitment tool for current members to offer a discounted rate to prospective members. With this campaign, new members pay just 50 percent of the national dues rate when they join AAUW at a public event. Branches also earn one free national membership to give away for every two newly recruited members, with a maximum of three free memberships annually.

How to Use the Shape the Future Campaign

Step 1:

Hold an event (or participate in one) that is open to the public. Set up an AAUW table with membership brochures and mission-based materials — people of all ages say the number one reason they join AAUW is our mission! — and offer the discounted membership rate to attendees.  You can also reserve a booth or table at a local event that you know attracts a large audience of women who would find AAUW appealing.
You can cosponsor events with local community colleges or colleges/universities, campus women’s groups, and such community organizations as the Girl Scouts, the YWCA, and professional women’s associations. Spotlight local issues that will allow you to collaborate with other groups, especially those with different membership bases.

Step 2:

Ask visitors to complete the guest/referral sheet (download below). Encourage them to join on the spot to receive 50 percent off their national dues. Remember: AAUW national dues are almost entirely tax deductible! Regular AAUW national dues are $59, of which $56 is tax deductible; $3 of the national dues payment is not tax deductible because it supports the AAUW Action Fund’s section 501(c)(4) Lobby Corps and election-related activities. Discounted dues through Shape the Future are only $29.50, of which $26.50 is tax deductible; $3 of the national dues payment is not tax deductible.

Step 3:

Give the membership dues collected at the event to your branch finance officer along with the guest/referral list. The finance officer can then attach these forms for submission to the state and the national office. Membership dues should be submitted to the state and national offices within 30 days of the event.
The top branch and state recruiters in two categories will get special recognition: the highest overall percentage growth and the highest overall numeric growth in new members as of the annual February 1 count. All individuals who recruit five or more new members will receive special lapel pins for top recruiters.

Who Is Eligible for Membership?

AAUW membership is open to anyone with an associate (or equivalent) degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution. A “new member” is someone entirely new to AAUW or an individual who rejoins after two or more years of nonmembership.
A national member who joins a branch is not a new member. “New members” are the only members eligible for the membership discounts through this campaign.

Celebrate Graduates with a Free AAUW Membership

Celebrate the success of a graduate this season with the Give a Grad a Gift campaign. Anyone who has graduated within the past two years is eligible, so don’t forget interns or student teachers you might know. A free one-year membership is a great way to celebrate their accomplishments! Give a Grad a Gift can also be applied to the Younger Women’s Task Force.
