President’s Message

Our Branch held its first afternoon general meeting on Oct. 19, and we were pleasantly surprised to see that 21 of our members made it to the meeting at Cerritos Park East at this new time. The program was an intimate look at the many sides of the AAUW Fund, presented by Dorothy Edwards and Gail Ross. We enjoyed the wealth of information as well as the icebreaker and the AAUW Bingo game. Though our November meeting will be at the regular evening time, we voted to hold another afternoon meeting in January to accommodate the schedule of our guest presenter.

Our latest member directories were distributed at the Oct. meeting, so if you did not receive yours, be sure to contact Marilyn Forsstrom to arrange a pick-up.

There is new information on International Interests this month, so be sure to read through the whole newsletter.

As a final note, our members were informed of the passing of our former branch president, Joyce Grohmann, and quite a few members were in attendance at the memorial service last week. Joyce will be missed.

Our first Big Fundraiser, a Movie and Lunch Event on October 28 was a success. Thank you to all who attended and those who couldn’t, but contributed anyway.  Over $750 was made.  The Alberta Fund currently has $2900 deposited toward our goal.

The La Palma-Cerritos branch of AAUW has created our own memorial fund, called the Alberta Brose Memorial Fund, to go to women who return to school just as she did.  Details below:

This is a short time, two year fund with a goal of $5000 for completion by June 30, 2019.
All donations must come through the La Palma-Cerritos branch.
Personal and branch contributions may be made.
The branch will get CA State and National recognition for completion.
Final donation will go to AAUW Fund for Career Development Grants for graduate students returning to school after 5+  year absence.
All donations are fully tax-deductible and an acknowledgement letter for each donation will be sent to Alberta’s family.

If you wish to donate, make your check payable to “La Palma Cerritos AAUW Fund”, put Fund # 4431 in the notation line at the bottom left and send directly to Marilyn.
